Therapy Has a Boundary Problem — And It’s Not You
In my latest episode of The Gaslit Truth Podcast, I sat down with Aaron Gilbert, founder of Boston Evening Therapy Associates, to get real about boundaries in therapy. Therapy doesn’t fall apart because clients don’t care—it falls apart because therapists don’t hold the line. Missed sessions get waved off, late cancellations aren’t charged, and money conversations are avoided. That’s not kindness. That’s confusion. If I’m not clear about what the session is worth, what happens if you don’t show up, or how this process works, then what are you really committing to? Therapy isn’t just what happens in the hour—it’s whether the hour matters at all.
And let’s be honest about money. It doesn’t ruin therapy—it reveals it. Money is tangled with power, shame, and control. If a client gets frustrated about a cancellation fee, that’s clinical material, not a billing problem. But when therapists backtrack or discount just to avoid discomfort, they teach that boundaries don’t mean anything. That’s not therapy—that’s people-pleasing with a license. Insurance isn’t neutral either: using benefits means diagnoses, documentation, and records that can be audited—and those labels can follow you into life insurance, court, or certain jobs. You deserve to know the trade-offs so you can make informed choices.
Aaron and I also unpack the phrase “meet clients where they’re at.” Empathy doesn’t mean abandoning boundaries or sacrificing your life—it means clear structure. Five minutes in the first session to explain the value of the hour, cancellation policies, and accountability can prevent months of confusion. Structure isn’t cold—it’s what makes therapy safe, shows that the work matters, and models self-respect.
If therapy actually matters, the appointment has to matter too. You can’t build real change on optional commitment, and I can’t help you build self-respect if I’m not modeling it. Aaron and I dive into scripts, boundary checklists, and reframing fees as part of the healing conversation in this episode.
